Their crop, known as transitional cotton, costs the same to grow, but does not bring in the same premium as organic cotton. Wal-Mart made a commitment to the organic cotton industry by purchasing more than 12 million pounds of transitional cotton and paying suppliers the same price as they would receive for certified organic, because we know the farmer’s efforts protect water, soil, humans and habitats from exposure to synthetic chemicals and pesticides.

Wal-Mart’s purchase of 12 million pounds of transitional cotton will save over 89,000 pounds (that is over 40 tons) of synthetic chemicals from going into the earth. This purchase helped over 43,000 acres of farm land to be farmed with organic methods.
